Which countries have the most neighbours

Some countries keep to themselves, others have half a region for neighbours. Knowing the leaders gives you a real edge when guessing from a map: an outline crowded with border lines narrows the options right away.

The tie at the top: China and Russia

China and Russia share first place with 14 land neighbours each. For Russia the exact number depends on whether you count disputed territories such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The figure shifts slightly depending on how you count, but it does not change their place at the top. Both countries stretch across vast distances and brush against several climate zones and cultures. China's neighbours run from North Korea through Mongolia to Afghanistan, while Russia's border reaches from Norway across Asia all the way to North Korea.

Brazil, the giant of South America

Brazil borders 10 countries, which means every South American state except two: Chile and Ecuador. That is a handy rule. If a quiz shows a huge outline in South America, Brazil is almost always the right call. The country covers nearly half the continent's area, which is why so many neighbours touch its border. Even France appears on this list, through the overseas territory of French Guiana to the north.

Germany, Europe's hub

Germany borders 9 countries, the most in Europe. Its neighbours from northwest to south:

  • North and west: Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France.
  • South: Switzerland and Austria.
  • East: Czechia and Poland.

This central position has shaped German history heavily. Once you know the nine neighbours, you can place the German outline fast even without labels, because almost no other European country bundles so many borders.

Africa's centre: DR Congo

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has the most borders with 9 neighbours. France also reaches a high count when you combine the European mainland with its overseas territories. On the European mainland, France borders 8 states. DR Congo sits huge in the heart of the continent and therefore touches nine countries, from Angola in the southwest to South Sudan in the north. Centrally placed giants like this are often recognizable in a quiz from sheer size alone.

Why this helps you guess

Lots of neighbours usually means a large or centrally placed country. If an outline looks like a puzzle piece with many edges, think of the heavyweights: China, Russia, Brazil, Germany. Very smooth coastlines with little land border point instead to islands or the edge of a continent.

This rule of thumb does not replace a careful look, but it quickly rules out the unlikely candidates and points your eye at the right region. This logic sharpens fastest on real outlines. In CountryRush you can practise exactly that, and the Daily Trip slips new shapes into your day until you read border lines almost on instinct.
